Quick Overview

The Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate* issued three commemorative coin sets to commemorate the centennial of its founding: the issues featured: Kamehameha, the School’s namesake in 1986, Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the School’s founder in 1987 and Charles Reed Bishop, Pauahi’s husband and the School’s financial architect in 1988.

The three coin commemorative collection was first conceived by Mr. Richard Lyman, the 84-year-old President of the Board of Trustees for Bishop Estate and inspired by Dr. Donald Mitchell, the Schools' 50 year scholar and reknown author. The three-year Centennial commenced with a Special Mint Ceremony at the Royal Hawaiian Mint with the Board of Bishop Estate Trustees, the Governor and Lt. Governor of Hawaii, the Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court and special guests who minted their own gold and silver coins on Founder's Day, December 19, 1986.

The Kamehameha Coin honors the Schools' namesake and Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s great-grandfather, Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian Islands under one kingdom in 1810 and bequest his entire estate to Mrs. Bishop.

The obverse features a beautifully engraved bust of Kamehameha from a live watercolor painting by the French painter Louis Choris. The extremely well- detailed engraving is complete with the Estate/School name, anniversary motto and IMUA (FORWARD!), the Kamehameha battle cry and School’s motto.

The reverse features the Hawaiian Islands and quotes Kamehameha’s last words spoken on May 8, 1819; "E 'oni wale no 'oukou i ku'u pono...” (“Endless is the good I have given you to enjoy…”)

The Limited Numbered Edition in gold and silver each weigh a full ounce of .999 fine gold or silver in the 39mm commemorative Dala size. The 1986 Kamehameha Coin was $950 in gold, $39 in silver and $15 for bronze. Each Dala was packaged in a custom booklet with certificate of authenticity and story by Dr. Mitchell.

* Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate, founded in 1887 by the estate of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, is rooted in the aina (land) - the heart of Hawaiian life. Since its founding, this "State Treasure" has grown dramatically and today is Hawaii's largest land owner whose educational programs and rich traditions touch the lives of thousands of individuals in Hawaii.
