Hawaii’s greatest race began with a blessing, thunderous drums, chants, hula and a light shower from the Gods. The Great Trans Ko'olau Trek, held on Sunday, May 11, 1997 was billed as the largest foot race in history with over 100,000 runners expected. H-3, Hawaii's newest superhighway was constructed 160 feet above Oahu's Halawa and Haiku Valleys and the massive Ko'olau mountain range on windward Oahu. The USATF-certified course covered 10 miles of the virgin freeway and afforded spectacular mountain-to-Pacific Ocean views. Runners set off for 3.5 miles uphill on the island's lush windward side in Kaneohe, followed the roadway as it winds through the mountains, and through a mile-long tunnel. The course continues 5 miles downhill as runners cross a portion of metropolitan Honolulu before dashing across rolling hills to the finish inside Aloha Stadium beside historic Pearl Harbor. The obverse featured race title HEIHEI ‘O HALAWA ‘EKOLU, Hawaiian petrographs of runners and date. The reverse featured the title in English: GREAT TRANS KOOLAU TREK, the Koolau Mountains and H-3 logo. OIP of the one ounce 999 fine silver 39mm commemorative coin was $39.00.
