Princess Kaiulani

Princess Kaiulani

Princess Kaiulani (1875–1899) was named "Heir Apparent" to the Kingdom of Hawaii on her sixteenth birthday by her aunt, Queen Liliuokalani. While her future seemed bright, she never married and died a tragic death at the age of 23. The beautiful Princess is remembered for spreading Aloha wherever she went. Victoria Kaiulani Cleghorn was heir to the Kingdom of Hawaii and held the title of Crown Princess. Kaiulani became known throughout the world for her intelligence, beauty and determination. After the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, she visited the United States to help restore the Kingdom. Although reluctant to participate in politics, she made many speeches and public appearances denouncing the overthrow of her country and the injustice toward the Hawaiian people. While Lorrin A. Thurston was touring the United States promoting the annexation of Hawaii, Kaiulani took action and traveled to Washington, D.C. where she made an informal visit to U.S. President Grover Cleveland and his wife. The pro-annexation press of the time often treated Kaiulani with contempt and referred to her as a half-breed. In 1897, Kaiulani returned to Hawaii. Now a private citizen of the Republic of Hawaii and on August 12, 1898 she became a citizen of the Territory of Hawaii. During the Annexation ceremony, Princess Kaiulani, Queen Liliuokalani and the royal family wore funeral attire in mourning for the loss of the Hawaiian’s own country. In 1899 while horseback riding on the Island of Hawaii, Kaiulani caught a cold that developed into pneumonia. Kaiulani returned to Oahu where she died on March 6, 1899 at the age of 23 of inflammatory rheumatism. Princess Kaiulani grew up with painters and writers and is lovingly remembered in music and dance by the people of Hawaii through mele, oli and hula.

  2. 1991 PRINCESS KAIULANI PLATINUM HAPAUMI PUELA

1991 PRINCESS KAIULANI PLATINUM HAPAUMI PUELA

    $550.00

In 1988 the Mint struck a few trial platinum specimens, but never considered producing a platinum issue until the beautiful Princess Dala dies were in hand. So in 1991, BVNH selected the new 17mm one tenth ounce Princess die to test the minting qualities of platinum in preparation for a future platinum issue. A special platinum reverse “hapaumi” (one tenth of an ounce) die was cut that featured the Hawaii Puela that was the center-most design element of the Hawaii Crest that was the center-most element in the Hawaii Coat of Arms. The idea was to use the most sacred symbol, the Puela, with the most precious of the precious metals. Everything worked great. The test platinum minting was a success. But it was not until 1997 that the complete Hawaiian Platinum Puela would be issued in all five sizes. The 1991 Princess Puela platinum specimens weigh one tenth of an ounce of .9995 fine platinum. These trial strike Hapaumis have never been released. NOT PREVIOUSLY OFFERED FOR SALE Learn More

    1991 PRINCESS KAIULANI SILVER DALA

    $89.00

October 16,1875 was a joyous day throughout the Kingdom of Hawaii. A princess had been born and it was apparent even then that she would be exceptionally beautiful, Victoria Kaiulani. Her parents, her family and her future subjects, adored the only child of Archibald Scott Cleghorn. She was expected to lead a storybook life. But in 1887 Likelike died suddenly and Kaiulani's happiness was clouded by a vision her mother had on her deathbed: “that Kaiulani would live far away...would never marry...and never be queen.” The first part of her mother's prophesy was realized when Kaiulani was sent to England to further her education. When King Kalakaua died in 1891, Liliuokalani proclaimed Princess Kaiulani "Heir Apparent" to the Hawaiian Throne on March 9,1891. While she was living in England, Princess Kaiulani was the toast of the rich and royal. $340.00

In 2004, Royal Hawaiian Mint commemorated its 30th Anniversary with the unique issue of a six dala set utilizing the Mint’s six “Royal Designs.” The 2004 Ten Dala Set was unique because it featured a dollar sign denomination on the reverse for the first time. While many RHM issues have the “dala” denomination, none had a dollar sign value until 2004. In addition to the six classic “Royal” designs and the $10 Dala reverse with the Kingdom of Hawaii Royal Coat-of-Arms, the issue was also unique because none of the 50 dalas of each design were ever sold. Bernard gave the 30 complete custom packaged sets to friends when he visited Hawaii in 2004 and the most of the 20 singles of each design were used as tips and give aways when he visited Hawaii. Few of the 2004 Ten Dala issue survive in original mint condition. Learn More
